When I was a kid, I was told that the soul was a sort of combination of heart, spirit and mind that was a gateway to the next in life. But I also thought it was something physical like your spleen or your kidneys. It’s true. I actually thought it was a part of our anatomy. I guess I was wrong, but since I’m not a scientist, you could still convince me that the soul is found somewhere behind the diaphragm.
What I do know is that my soul left my body today. At the Igreja San Martinho de Cedofeita we had our second concert. I will tell you that we had a standing ovation and a demand for an encore. But the real magic happened in rehearsal before our concert. The acoustics of the building are so magical, so in tune, that while we were singing, I felt my soul leave my body and go to another place. A place that is warm and happy and free of politics. It was a good place and I’d like to go back there, but for now, I have the memory of this amazing performance with these students who sang with passion and musicality and beauty. I will say here what we heard from the audience: bravo!
